RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "They were part of numerous British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
